WELCOME
Welcome to the Surgical Technology Educators Program (STEP). This platform represents my innovation project developed through the Applied Digital Learning and Leadership program at Lamar University. STEP was created to support surgical technology educators, especially those transitioning from the operating room into academia, by providing structured onboarding, leadership development, and practical educational tools. Grounded in research, accreditation standards, and real-world experience, this work is designed to strengthen educator confidence, improve student outcomes, and promote long-term program stability. I am honored to share this initiative and invite you to explore the vision behind STEP.

A Little About Me
My name is Stefanie Vaughn, and I serve as the Program Director of Surgical Technology at Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas. With over fifteen years of experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist before transitioning into education in 2016, I bring both clinical expertise and real-world perspective into every aspect of my work. I am currently pursuing a Master of Education in Applied Digital Learning and Leadership at Lamar University, with a focus on innovative instructional design, digital integration, and strengthening educator development in surgical technology programs.

I am the founder and co-developer of the Surgical Technology Educators Program (STEP), an initiative designed to support surgical technology educators, whom I intentionally refer to as learners, as they transition from the operating room into academic leadership. STEP bridges the gap between clinical mastery and effective teaching practice through structured onboarding, mentorship, and professional growth pathways. My passion lies in empowering educators with the tools, confidence, and community they need to thrive.

At heart, I am both a builder and a cultivator, whether developing programs, mentoring future leaders, or tending to my garden at home. Outside of my professional life, I enjoy gardening, hiking, camping, spending time at the beach, raising chickens, and living a simple, grounded life with my husband Don, our four adult children, and six grandchildren. I believe meaningful leadership grows the same way gardens do, with intention, care, and consistency, and I strive to cultivate that spirit in every space I lead.
